BNP Paribas Fortis becomes first Belgian bank to provide customers with Android Pay
As of today, BNP Paribas Fortis is offering all customers in possession of a credit card the opportunity to make use of the Android Pay contactless payment solution. BNP Paribas Fortis, Hello bank! and Fintro clients thus become the first in Belgium to be able to take advantage of this innovation. Being able to make a payment easily, quickly and safely by holding your smartphone close to the point of sale terminal is set to radically improve the mobile payments experience.
As customer expectations for mobile payments and services become ever greater, BNP Paribas Fortis is proud to be the first Belgian bank to provide clients with the chance to use Android Pay for contactless payments by Visa and MasterCard. Thanks to this partnership between BNP Paribas Fortis and Google, Belgium now becomes the 4th country in Europe and the 10th in the world to enjoy the benefits of Android Pay. This payments solution developed by Google joins the other easy and secure payment methods already offered by BNP Paribas Fortis.
From now on, BNP Paribas Fortis, Hello bank! and Fintro clients who own a smartphone with the Android operating system will be able to download the Android Pay app free of charge and store their BNP Paribas Fortis Visa card and/or MasterCard in it so that they can use the app to make contactless payments.
This new solution enables customers to settle their purchases with their smartphone anywhere in the world where contactless payments are generally accepted, without any extra charges.
Android Pay is now immediately available to clients who hold a credit card issued by BNP Paribas Fortis, Hello bank! or Fintro. In the very near future, customers will also be able to add their debit cards and loyalty cards to the Android Pay app.
Shopping by smartphone
Android Pay enables smartphone users to purchase products and services from a large number of retailers and merchants via a contactless point of sale terminal. Clients of BNP Paribas Fortis, Hello bank! and Fintro will be able to download the Android Pay app at the Google Play store, and then register their chosen credit cards directly in the app. There is a simplified authentication process using SMS. Once the credit card details have been stored, users will be asked to choose one card as the default card and set the payment parameters.
The customer can then pay for purchases by simply holding his/her smartphone close to a contactless point of sale terminal – i.e. one equipped with Near Field Communication functionality – at a store or retail outlet.
Over 3.2 million terminals in Europe, including more than 85,000 in Belgium – both at large supermarkets and chains and smaller retailers and local traders – are already compatible with Google’s mobile payments solution. From now on, Deliveroo, Uber, Carrefour and Vueling, among many other businesses, will be accepting this innovative solution, which enables users to make payments of any amount without having to take out their credit card or enter a separate PIN code, as the card user identification is based on the smartphone containing the app.
For purchases up to €25 it is not even necessary to unlock your phone as authentication can be performed via the screen. For payments above this threshold, the user will need to unlock the device by entering his/her usual ID.
Easy and safe
Security and data confidentiality are a central, integral feature of the Android Pay solution. When the customer uses a credit card with Android Pay, the card details are not stored either in the mobile device, on Google’s servers, or in the merchant’s system. Transactions are based on a virtual account number, known as a ‘token’, which is specific to the device. The token is linked to a dynamic security code specific to each separate transaction.
“Being the first bank in Belgium able to offer Android Pay is an important milestone for BNP Paribas Fortis because one of our key commitments to our customers is to provide them with new, innovative ways to pay safely and easily, how, where and when they want,” underlined Max Jadot, CEO of BNP Paribas Fortis SA/NV, explaining: “This solution fits perfectly with our overall payments strategy and will help to ensure that we play a leading role in offering choice to customers and peace of mind to merchants by acting as a real payments aggregator, in the run-up to full implementation of the revised EU Directive on Payment Services (PSD2).”
“We’re delighted to announce the launch of Android Pay in Belgium today,” stated Thierry Geerts, Country Manager for Google in Belgium, underlining: “This technology provides a simple and secure way to make mobile payments. From now on, millions of Belgians will be able to use their Android phone to make contactless payments at some 85,000 points of sale across the country. Meanwhile this gives BNP Paribas Fortis a unique opportunity to offer its customers an innovative experience.”
